Remote Compatibility

• Does this replace my PS3 BT remote?
  The PlayStation does not allow you to pair multiple remotes. So yes, this does replace your PS3 BT remote.
• What remotes does this work with?
  It will work with almost any universal remote. We test with Harmony, URC, Sony, and One-for-all remotes. However, most any universal remote should work just fine.
• How are the keys on the Harmony assigned?
  We have mapped the 51 keys from the second-generation PS2 remote to the 51 keys on the PS3 remote. (First generation PS2 remotes only have 39 keys). Refer to the key mapping for more information. In addition, the device understands the DVD discrete power commands. The ps3toothfairy can optionally overload keys to provide additional functions.
• Can I use my PS2 remote?
  Yes, you can use either a first or second generation PS2 remote with the ps3toothfairy. The first generation PS2 remote did not provide Reset/Power or Stop/Eject. The ps3toothfairy properly handles the dual codes that are transmitted for certain PS2 remote keys.
• Can I use my JP1 remote?
  Yes, the JP1 remote works with a protocol and device upgrade. We have tested it with the 2117 remote. It does require 2 device codes; One for DVD functions and the other for the special keys (L1,R1, etc).
• How can I use my URC-200 Remote?
  The URC remote will work for just about everything using a regular Sony DVD player. However, the PS3 has some special keys. You may either learn them from another PS2 remote (or borrow a Harmony). Alternatively, if your remote has Aux / Sony / 414 preprogrammed, it already knows about the PS2 commands and will work with the ps3toothfairy.
• May I pair both the ps3toothfairy and a BD Remote?
  No, the PS3 restricts you to having one "remote device" paired. Since the ps3toothfairy looks like a BD Remote to the PS3, you may only use one or the other.
• I don't have an ANGLE button on my Harmony?
  You are probably trying to find it under the Activies menu. You can either add it to your existing activity or you can press the devices button on your remote to select the ps3toothfairy device and you will have the Angle soft key.
• Where are the pronto / hex codes?
  There are pronto files for all four supported device Ids (Device 2 is the default) Device 1, Device 2,Device 3,Device 4
• Do you have a pronto pcf or ccf?
  Yes ps3toothfairy.pcf or ps3toothfairy.ccf
• What devices can I use for MakeHex?
  MakeHex will use the Sony20.IRP file and device codes 24.XX, 26.XX, 28.XX, and 30.XX corresponding to the ps3toothfairy device id 1 to 4. The XX is both 73 and 218. So for instance, by default the ps3toothfairy is configured for Id 2. This means it will respond to 26.218 and 26.73. The pronto codes (makehex output) is in the above question for all device Ids.

• When will my order ship?
  Orders usually ship within a few business days.
• How much does it cost?
  We continually update our models. Our latest units are offered in a ready-to-go with wired IR ELITE version ($89) and a DIY Elite Bare version ($64). Contact us for quantity discounts. We may still offer our V1 standard and bare units if available. We will do our best to keep your price and shipping as low as possible while still providing rock solid support to our customers.
• Where can I purchase the ps3toothfairy?
  From this site -- soon other resellers will be offering our products.
• Will you ship internationally?
  Yes, but our customers will be responsible for applicable taxes and shipping fees. We cannot write "GIFT" or otherwise hide the real contents of any packages shipped overseas.

Installation, Setup, and Configuration

• What type of power connector does it have?
  The ps3toothfairy uses a standard 2.1mm polarized, tip-positive barrel connector. We will also offer a subminiature 110-250V wall pack as well as a USB-A to 2.1mm cable. You may of course provide your own power cable, the device requires a 3.3 to 12VDC input. Note that many power adapters output much more than the rated value. If you are unsure, purchase ours or use a REGULATED power supply or use one rated for 4-6VDC. For installers that wish to build their own cable, we can provide a list of qualified connectors.
• How do I pair with my PS3?
  Using your SIXAXIS or other PS3 controller, navigate to the accessory screen to add a BD Remote. Select the option and your PS3 will indicate that it is waiting for you to press Start+Enter on your remote. Point your IR remote at the ps3toothfairy and press the Angle key. The LED will blink twice and remain illuminated. Now press the Start key. The LED will remain illuminated. Next, press and hold the Enter key until the PS3 screen changes. Now release the Enter key and your PS3 is paired.

PS3 Compatibility

• Are there any issues with the 2.40 or 2.41 firmware?
  There are NO compatibility issues with the ps3toothfairy and any PS3 firmware version -- Everything works correctly.
• What if the shutdown macro changes?
  The ps3toothfairy can deal with this in a few ways. If the change is simple, a special configuration command can be setup to modify the shutdown macro. If the change is major, an entirely new macro may be programmed by the user (V2 units, shipping after June 2024). The macro will respond to the Power Off command, but you could have it do anything you like.

RF Extender / IR Distribution

• How does the wired IR control work?
  The wired IR input allows you to feed the output of a Xantech or compatible IR distribution system directly to the toothfairy, bypassing the IR sensor on the front. You configure the device to use the optical or wired sensor. The rear of the device has a standard 1/8" IR input. the ps3toothfairy will handle signals from 4V to 12V and will autosense either baseband or modulated signals. Customers have successfully used this with Xantech, Niles, Logitech, and RTI systems.
• Can I use more than one ps3toothfairy on a whole house network?
  Yes, due to numerous requests, we have added that capability. You can operate multiple, independently addressable ps3toothfairy devices.
• Is the direct IR input compatible with emitters or baseband?
  The ps3toothfairy is compatible with both emitters and baseband signals. No setup is required, simply plug in the cable and the ps3toothfairy will autodetect the signal and adjust accordingly.
• My IR distribution system only sends 5 VDC to the emitters?
  The ps3toothfairy is compatible for systems using between 4 and 12VDC. It will automatically sense the signal level and whether it is modulated or baseband. You only need to tell the ps3toothfairy that you want to use the wired input, and it figures out the rest.
• The direct IR input is not working?
  Make sure it is enabled in the configuration of the ps3toothfairy. After restarting your device, use your remote to press ANGLE, 4, 2 to enable the wired IR.
• Does it work with the URC RF Extenders? Do you need to set the power level?
  Yes, it works and you do not need to adjust the power level. We leave ours on the default and it functions correctly.

Questions about Features

• Does it support discrete power commands?
  Although the PS3 does not natively support discrete power commands, we have implemented a few macros that emulate specific functions. Since the PS3 does not currently have native support for discrete power commands, any solution probably won't be 100% reliable. The ps3toothfairy does interpret and understand the Sony discrete DVD commands and maps those to PS3 power functions.
• Does it work with IR blasters?
  Yes, it is fully compatible with IR blasters. Note that our receiver is very sensitive and plasma safe. We have placed the ps3toothfairy behind a flat panel (i.e. no line of sight) and it functioned flawlessly. We don't promise this will work in every situation though.
• What do you mean by combo keys?
  The Sony bluetooth protocol supports a certain set of keys that may be transmitted simultaneously. For instance Start + Enter. There are too many permutations of these keys to try them all, so the ps3toothfairy has the capability to transmit any multiple key combo supported by the protocol. The ps3toothfairy uses this feature to pair with the PS3.
• Discrete off does not appear to be working.
  The easiest way to check discrete off is to enable the "long macro" mode. Then try to use it. The LED will stay on for a long time as it continues to process commands for the PS3. If this does NOT happen, then the remote is not seding the right code. Harmony users, the discrete off in the Logitech database is not correct, we are working to have it fixed. If you can program your own hex codes, the discrete off command is hex 2E.
• How can I trigger Power Off?
  For Harmony users, there is a PwrOff command in the ps3toothfairy device profile. For all others, the device/function code for PwrOff is 9D/2F -- the same as a Sony DVD discrete off.

Troubleshooting

• When I press Up/Down/Left/Right it repeats the command many times?
  We have only seen this occur with the Harmony remotes. There are a couple of settings for repeats in the Harmony software. First make sure you are using the ps3toothfairy profile. Then click on Troubleshooting, responds to some commands either too many times or only occasionally., If PS3 is not responding, try increasing the setting. If it is responding too much, then try decreasing the setting. Setting it to "1" typically works fine.
• I am using my own power supply and the device will not pair?
  Try using another power supply. We have seen numerous cases where using a low quality power supply has introduced excessive noise and prevented the device from pairing. In all these cases, using a better quality power supply (or purchasing one from us) fixed the problem.

• What is your warranty?
  The ps3toothfairy is warranted for 30 days to be free of defects in materials and workmanship. No other warranties or representations of any kind whatsoever, expressed or implied, except that of tital, and all implied warranties including any warranty of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are hereby disclaimed. The total liability of ps3toothfairy.com and its owners shall not exceed the purchase price of the ps3toothfairy. In no event will ps3toothfairy.com and its owners be liable for consequential, incidental, or special damages.
